USED DOGS vs. Katrina
Minutes after Hurricane Katrina had passed, USED DOGS went to work in the sweltering August heat, bringing dogs out of danger and back to our facilities, and watering and feeding animals that we found relatively safe in their yards. Over the next six weeks, we were able to help more than 300 desperate animals, both cats and dogs. As the fences came down and the dogs got loose, they began to form packs. This behavior frightened the first responders, and tragically, two dogs we had been caring for were shot. After witnessing this, USED DOGS became relentlessly committed to getting these animals out of the way of the emergency workers, and on their way to safety as quickly as possible. It was a guerrilla-style effort that sometimes required fence-climbing from backyard, to backyard. Soon, military and police agencies began providing USED DOGS with leads to dogs and cats in need. We came across some amazingly resilient animals who eagerly and spiritedly responded to our help. This has been an intense life-changing experience.
NOTE: USED DOGS is lucky to be located on some of the highest ground in New Orleans, so the decision to stay and continue our work of rescuing dogs was an obvious one. All of our USED DOGS were safe and sound before, during, and after the storm.

Working Toward Adoption
USED DOGS is continuing to provide hurricane relief for animals, caring for strays, and for dogs that cannot be reunited with their families. Homes have been found for several pets whose owners' lives were so devastated they have no place to keep them. Others are becoming available now. USED DOGS realizes that adoption is the most important goal, because an animal is not truly rescued until it is successfully rehomed. In our short year-and-a-half of business, we have spay/neutered and found homes for over 43 stray dogs, and reunited many lost dogs with their families.
To ensure that our USED DOGS are friendly and adoptable, we spend quality one-on-one time with them, working on manners, and carefully reorienting them and addressing any abuse, neglect and abandonment issues they may have. Many of the dogs who were cowering and fearful when they came, have confidence and are noticeably happier now.

What's Next?
Hurricane Katrina took its toll on USED DOGS, on our kennels and fences, and on our time, energy and emotions. Caring for dogs in the aftermath is proving to be challenging. The base of support we had developed here has been decimated. Our volunteers have been displaced and are no longer available, and our major donors are understandably too concerned about their own businesses surviving to support us like they did before the storm. Things are not back to normal here by any means, but we keep on going. USED DOGS is very hopeful that the recent news from Washington D.C. about money for levees will mean that the city will eventually recover, but at this time USED DOGS really needs your support to help us bridge the gap.
How can you help? USED DOGS has suffered significant damage to outdoor kennels, kennel coverings, doghouses and fencing.
- We need to replace and repair those shelters.
- We need fencing to allow the dogs more playtime.
- We need funds to cover veterinary care and spay/neuter.
- We always need food. Wellness, NutroMax, Pro Plan and Maximum Nutrition are the brands we use.
You Make it Possible We are resourceful and efficient with our funds. That's one benefit of running a lean and mean entrepreneurial agency. You can be sure that any funds contributed will be used to their best advantage. Thank you for reading about USED DOGS! We are so grateful for you!
